Information

Chickens are two-legged birds that live in groups called flocks. They are omnivores, with one stomach, consuming both other animals and vegetation, and consume things like seeds and insects out of the soil. Male chickens, called roosters are easily identified by their plumage around the face and often more brightly colored feathers. Chickens can only fly low for short distances, though some domesticated chickens are unable to fly at all, due to their enlarged size and conditions. Chickens have been domesticated by humans for 4-6,000 years for meat and eggs.

Other than meat and eggs, the byproducts of chickens are used for many purposes. Chicken manure is a valuable fertilizer, and their feathers can be used for down and other purposes.

Poultry is considered to be a lean protein with a low saturated fat content. Poultry should be cooked thoroughly as it can contain salmonella, which is poisonous to humans.
