History
The area now called Atlanta was originally inhabited by Cherokee and Creek Native Americans. Standing Peachtree, or Pakanahuili, was a Creek village and important trading post located in what is now Buckhead Atlanta. Americans built Fort Peachtree in 1812 in what is Peachtree Road in Gwinnett, and the Creeks were forced to give up the land in 1821
The area was was later called Terminus, as Atlanta became the Zero Point in connecting the Western and Atlantic Railroads from the Midwest to Savannah in the 1800s. The Zero Mile Post can be found at the Underground Atlanta. The first hotel, Atlanta Hotel, opened in 1845.
Atlanta became a major hub during the Civil War. Atlanta was set on fire and burned down in 1864 by Union troops. After the Civil War, many black Americans moved to the Atlanta in search of opportunity. Coca-Cola began bottling in Atlanta 1886. In 1906, a massacre occurred in which 25 blacks and 2 whites died. Soon after, segregationist laws began to go in effect.
The By the early-mid 1900s, Sweet Auburn Avenue became an area of prosperity within the black community, and was the birthplace and home of Martin Luther King, Jr, whose home is now a historical site. In the 1950s, Atlanta and Dr. King became a center for the Civil Rights Movement. In 1939, Gone with the Wind premiered at Fox Theater. Lenox Square opened in 1959. Maynard Jackson, the city's first black mayor was elected in 1973.
